Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken 3rd-level domain names remained operational.
